Have Yourself a Very Little Christmas

I have now celebrated the Coming of Claus for six years (going on seven). I've had my macro lens1 for the past three.

I figure, most people focus on the big things at Christmas — the giant tree, huge gifts, a jumbo ham or turkey — but we shouldn't forget the little things that make the holiday what it is.

So, to get everyone primed for Santa's Glorious Gift-Giving Extravaganza™, here's a selection of ornaments and decorations I've photographed from mere inches away. The smallest of the bunch (i.e. the pink bunny slippers) are only ¼" high, and most only show 1-2" max.

You can click on an image to embiggen. Or if you're interested, you can view the entire Flickr set (44 photos).

1 A macro lens allows you to take pictures from reeeeeally close up. You can capture very fine detail on very small things. Unless those very small things are part of larger things that want to lick you, claw you, or push the camera button. Then it becomes significantly more difficult. (Also wet, bloody, or whiny).

  1. Nice job! Are you sure those aren't really your bunny slippers?

    1. Yes, Alex, I'm sure those aren't mine. My pink bunny slippers have pink bunny slippers of their own.

  2. I love these! The little details are so special. My favorite Christmas stuff are little figurines and things handed down to me that we've had for years. Do you have them on Flickr as public domain where people can repost with credit? (not sure if I have the terminology right but hopefully you get what I mean).

    1. I don't know if the terminology's right, either, but the sentiment is. These photos are on Flickr and can be reposted, adapted, etc. (ideally with credit) as long as you're not using them for commercial purposes. So yes, you can grab these and share them if you want. Glad you like them!

    1. Thanks, Matt! Hmm... if I switched from novels to photo books, maybe I'd be able be to finish one.

  4. What a great idea! People run when I pull out the camera, as I have a unique capability to capture people with the most horrible expressions. Perhaps I should switch to inanimate objects as well. (Although my file of "ugly family photos" is a handy item for future blackmail.)

    1. Or, you could do what I did: Last year, we had a 3-for-1 photo book deal, but only had two books planned. So for the third one, I took all the photos I had of people making faces (whether on purpose or unintentional) and compiled them into one book. It's one of my son's favorites.
