Eight Crazy Nates

This photo was inspired by a few my cousin created last year. For reference, I also considered calling it "Eight Men Out," "Eight Is (More Than) Enough," or "Hot Damn, Feet Freeze Fast When You're Barefoot in the Snow." (I was barefoot for about two minutes at the end of the shoot, enough for four back-and-forth trips to the camera — three takes, followed by the retrieval of my equipment.)

This is just a hunch, but I suspect it's much easier to do this type of shot indoors, with fixed lighting and non-freezing temperatures. Though of course that way you don't get nearly the same sort of looks from the neighbors.

The final tally:
26 - degrees Fahrenheit (-3.3 degrees Celsius)
10 - hours before all pain subsided from my toes
9 - photographs layered into one
8 - Nates
7 - visible goatees
6 - pairs of pants
5 - hats
4 - shirts
3 - jackets
2 - sweatshirts
1 - pair of shorts
0 - footprints

  1. No footprints - now that took effort.
Dude, in the one shot it looks like more than your feet are freezing.

    1. You're right, Alex. My hand did get pretty cold holding that snowball...

  2. 10 hours of painful toes...worth it!

But yeah, I would think it'd be easier indoors with fixed lighting and non-freezing temperatures. Still, very cool.

    1. Thanks, M.J.! I do like how it came together, especially since I was basically making it up as I went along with each wardrobe change.

(Next time I might try to plan things out beforehand, and maybe even get the Nates to play nice with each other -- that is, interact rather than each one do his own thing.)

  3. That is AWESOME! And I thought my collection of "Tying My Shoe" pictures was clever.

    1. Thanks, Al! I still love your shoe-tying series, and think it's certainly more original (if not more clever). Mine simply has more complexity in its execution.

  5. Hehe--and thanks so much for the high resolution version! I'm curious, did you do 8 Nates because it rhymes?

    1. Actually, the rhyme didn't occur to me until I started putting together this post. I went with eight because when I stopped after seven I realized I hadn't placed any Nates in the front right portion of the photo, leaving quite a gap. So I waited for my feet to thaw, then changed up my wardrobe, set the camera back in place, and glared at it whilst holding a snowball.

  6. lol, I think it might have been worth the pain!

    1. Absolutely. The pain was temporary, but the photo is forever.

      Or something like that.

  7. This is a very interesting shot. Bet you had a lot of fun putting it all together, if not drying out all those wet clothes afterwards.

    1. It was definitely fun to do, but tiresome. With all the wardrobe changes and multiple takes in each outfit, it took close to an hour to do. Luckily, not much drying was necessary -- but thawing certainly was.
